Bending Loss in Fiber Optic Sensors

Losses may be the worst scenario when they rocket up until zero power output. Attenuation in fiber optics can come from its attenuation coefficient, absorption, scattering, and extrinsic effects. Bending losses are extrinsic effects influencing the power loss in a single-mode. This study investigates the influence of optical loss induced by the macro-bending of optical fibers on the signal quality of an optical frequency-domain reflectometry (OFDR) system. First, the finite element software COMSOL 5. It examines Single-Mode Fiber (SMF) and Multimode Fiber (MMF) with step and graded index profiles incorporated into sensor coils of varying diameters and numbers of turns. Due to the geometrical imperfections of the core cladding, there may be microscopic bulges or depressions in the fiber axis. Initially, the laser beam starts out moving at a critical propagation angle. Abstract: In FTTH, optical fibers are frequently bent at the corners of the walls causing the propagating light in the fiber to radiate away which results in transmission losses and limits reach of the fiber network.
