Four Classifications of Relay Protection

Relay protection in power systems is generally divided into four categories: current, voltage, frequency, and special-purpose relays.1. Current-Based Relays

Current relays operate when the current exceeds or falls below a predetermined value. They include overcurrent relays, which trip when current exceeds a set limit, and directional relays, which consider the direction of current flow. These relays are widely used for feeder, transformer, and motor protection to prevent damage from short circuits or overloads .

2. Voltage-Based Relays

Voltage relays respond to abnormal voltage conditions, such as overvoltage or undervoltage. They are essential for generator and busbar protection, ensuring that equipment is disconnected during voltage fluctuations that could cause insulation failure or instability .

3. Frequency-Based Relays

Frequency relays detect deviations in system frequency, which can indicate generation-load imbalance. They are critical in power system stability, especially in interconnected grids, and can trigger load shedding or generator tripping to maintain system integrity .

4. Special-Purpose Relays

These relays are designed for specific protection schemes and include differential relays, distance relays, reverse power relays, and loss-of-excitation relays. They provide fast and selective protection for transformers, transmission lines, and generators, often acting as primary or backup protection depending on the system design .

Summary

The four general categories—current, voltage, frequency, and special-purpose relays—cover the majority of protective functions in power systems. Each category ensures rapid fault detection and isolation, maintaining system stability, equipment safety, and operational reliability .
