How are the two pigtails fused together

Two fiber optic pigtails are fused together using a process called fusion splicing, where the bare ends of the fibers are precisely aligned and melted together to form a continuous optical path.Fusion Splicing Process

Fusion splicing is the most common method for permanently joining fiber optic pigtails. The process involves several key steps:

  1. Preparation: The protective coating of each fiber is stripped away using fiber strippers, leaving the bare glass exposed. The fiber ends are then cleaned and cleaved to create a flat, smooth surface .
  2. Alignment: The cleaved fiber ends are placed into a fusion splicer, a specialized machine that precisely aligns the cores of the two fibers. Proper alignment is critical to minimize signal loss and back reflection .
  3. Fusing: The splicer generates an electric arc that melts the glass ends of the fibers. The molten glass from both fibers merges, forming a seamless, continuous strand .
  4. Inspection and Testing: After the fusion, the splicer inspects the joint and measures the insertion loss, typically aiming for less than 0.02 dB for single-mode fibers. If the splice shows high loss or defects, it can be redone .
  5. Protection: The fused joint is then protected with a heat-shrink sleeve or splice protector to provide mechanical strength and prevent environmental damage .
Mechanical Splicing Alternative

While fusion splicing is preferred for permanent, low-loss connections, mechanical splicing is an alternative. In this method, the fiber ends are aligned in a precision sleeve filled with index-matching gel. The fibers are held in place without melting, making it faster and suitable for temporary or emergency repairs. However, mechanical splices typically have higher insertion loss (0.20–0.50 dB) and more back reflection than fusion splices .

Applications

Fusion splicing is widely used in backbone networks, long-haul telecom, FTTH (Fiber to the Home), and data centers, where low-loss, high-reliability connections are essential. Mechanical splicing is more common for short-term fixes or multimode fiber installations where ultra-low loss is less critical . In summary, fusing two pigtails involves precise alignment, melting, and joining of the fiber cores to create a continuous optical path, with fusion splicing providing the highest performance and reliability.
