The passive optical network consists of 6 components

A Passive Optical Network consists of an Optical Line Terminal (OLT), Optical Network Units (ONUs) or Optical Network Terminals (ONTs), an Optical Distribution Network (ODN), and passive optical splitters.Optical Line Terminal (OLT)

The OLT is the central hub of a PON, typically located at the service provider's central office or point of presence. It interfaces between the provider's core network and the PON, converting electrical signals into optical signals for downstream transmission and aggregating upstream data from multiple ONUs/ONTs. The OLT also manages bandwidth allocation, timing of upstream transmissions, and distance measurement (ranging) to each endpoint, ensuring efficient and collision-free communication .

Optical Network Unit (ONU) / Optical Network Terminal (ONT)

ONUs and ONTs are the endpoints of the PON, installed at or near the customer premises. They convert optical signals back into electrical signals for use by end devices. The distinction between an ONU and an ONT is mainly based on location: ONTs are typically installed directly at the subscriber's home, while ONUs may serve multiple users in a building or neighborhood .

Optical Distribution Network (ODN)

The ODN is the physical fiber infrastructure connecting the OLT to the ONUs/ONTs. It includes feeder fibers, distribution fibers, drop fibers, and passive optical splitters. The ODN ensures signal transmission over distances typically ranging from 20 km to 30 km and is critical for the network's performance and reliability .

Passive Optical Splitters

Optical splitters are passive devices that divide a single optical signal from the OLT into multiple paths, allowing one fiber to serve multiple ONUs/ONTs. They do not require power and are essential for the point-to-multipoint topology of PONs. Splitters can have various split ratios and are often implemented as planar lightwave circuit (PLC) splitters .

Summary

In essence, a PON operates with a point-to-multipoint architecture where the OLT serves as the central controller, the ODN provides the fiber pathways, splitters distribute the optical signals, and ONUs/ONTs act as the subscriber endpoints. This design reduces the amount of fiber and active equipment required compared to point-to-point networks, making PONs cost-effective and energy-efficient for delivering high-speed broadband services .
