Fiber Media Converters Media converters are standalone devices that receive an optical signal on one fiber type, convert it to an electrical signal, and retransmit it on another fiber type using the appropriate laser wavelength. For example, a converter can take a 1310 nm single-mode signal and output it as an 850 nm multimode signal. These devices are commonly used for point-to-point links, extending network segments, or connecting LANs to WANs .
  2. Mode Conditioning Patch Cables (MCPs) MCPs are specialized duplex patch cords that launch a single-mode laser into a multimode fiber without causing distortion. One end of the cable is single-mode fiber, precisely offset-spliced to multimode fiber on the other end. This controlled launch prevents differential mode delay, which can degrade signal quality. MCPs are often used when connecting transceivers with longwave outputs to multimode backbones .
