Adding cable tray dimensions in Revit

In Revit, cable tray dimensions such as width, height, and offset are set through the Type Properties of the cable tray, but there are system limitations for minimum sizes.Setting Up Cable Tray Dimensions
  1. Select the Cable Tray Tool In Revit MEP, go to the Systems tab and select Cable Tray. You can choose between cable trays with or without fittings depending on your project needs .
  2. Edit Type Properties
    • Click Edit Type to access the cable tray's parameters.
    • Here you can adjust Width, Height, Offset, and Bend Radius. The offset determines the vertical placement relative to a reference level, while the bend radius affects how sharply the tray can turn .
    • For cable trays with fittings, you can also set routing preferences and select specific fittings like vertical bends, T-junctions, or reducers .
  3. Dimension Constraints
    • Revit has minimum size restrictions for system families. For example, cable trays cannot be smaller than 25mm in width or height, which is a hard-coded limitation .
    • If you need smaller dimensions, the current workaround is limited; you may submit a feature request to Autodesk for consideration .
  4. Height and Side References
    • The Height Reference determines whether the tray's height is measured from the top, center, or bottom edge.
    • The Side Reference aligns the tray to the left, middle, or right edge during placement .
    • These references are retained during the active command and affect how dimensions are applied along walls or ceilings.
  5. Applying Dimensions in Views
    • Dimensions can be applied in plan or section views. In section views, you may need to manually add dimensions if the automatic settings do not display them .
    • Use the Apply Dimension option in the ribbon to control whether Revit automatically adopts dimensions from existing trays when continuing a run .
  6. Loading Fittings
    • If your project requires fittings, load them via Insert > Load Family > Cable Tray Fittings. Select the appropriate channel or ladder types and apply them in your routing .
Tips for Clean Layouts
  • Use cable trays with fittings for more flexible routing.
  • Adjust offsets and side references to avoid clashes with other MEP systems.
  • For visual clarity, consider dimensioning in section views to show height and alignment relative to ceilings or walls . By following these steps, you can effectively set and manage cable tray dimensions in Revit while respecting system limitations and ensuring proper routing and alignment.
