Double grounding PE wire in distribution box

Double grounding of a PE wire is generally not recommended; the PE should be connected to a single, properly designed grounding system to ensure safety and compliance.Proper PE Connection

In a distribution box, the PE (protective earth) wire should be connected to the PE bus or grounding bar, which serves as the central point for all protective earth connections . All metallic parts of the box, as well as electrical components requiring grounding, should be bonded to this PE bus using copper conductors with appropriate cross-section and yellow-green insulation . This ensures that fault currents are safely conducted to ground.

Avoiding Double Grounding

Double grounding—connecting the PE wire to multiple separate grounding points—can create ground loops, which may lead to:

  • Unintended current paths
  • Potential electric shock hazards
  • Interference with sensitive equipment Instead, the PE should be connected to one reliable grounding system, such as a dedicated earth electrode or the PEN split in a TN-C system, ensuring all protective paths converge at a single point .
Special Cases: TN-C and Construction Boards

If the supply uses a TN-C system (combined PEN conductor), the PEN should be brought into the distribution box and split into separate N and PE conductors there. Do not arbitrarily bridge PE to N outside the designated point, as this can compromise safety . For temporary construction boards, additional protective earthing may be required, but it should comply with local standards and not rely on arbitrary resistance values.

Use of RCDs

Even with proper grounding, installing an RCD (Residual Current Device) adds an extra layer of protection against leakage currents and potential electric shock. However, an RCD does not replace proper PE wiring; it complements it .

Key Recommendations
  • Connect all PE wires to a single PE bus in the distribution box .
  • Bond the metal enclosure and all grounded components to the PE bus .
  • Avoid multiple independent ground connections to prevent ground loops .
  • In TN-C systems, split PEN into N and PE at the distribution box, using correctly sized conductors .
  • Use RCDs for additional protection, especially in temporary or construction setups . Following these practices ensures safe operation, compliance with standards, and effective fault current dissipation.
