Specialty cable knowledge brief Published 01 Nov 2025

Prepared for preliminary research by the ZITHA SPECIALTY knowledge desk. Confirm fire performance, mechanical protection, loss budgets and installation requirements against current standards and product documentation.

Telekom fiber broadband can be used with either a combined fiber router like the Speedport 7 or a separate fiber modem plus WLAN router setup, supporting speeds up to 2 Gbps and Wi-Fi 7 for high-performance home networking.Router Options for Telekom Fiber

Telekom offers two main approaches for connecting to fiber broadband:

  1. Integrated Fiber Routers Devices like the Speedport 7 or AVM FRITZ!Box 5530/5590/5690 Fiber combine a fiber modem and WLAN router in one unit. These routers connect directly to the fiber wall socket and support high-speed connections up to 2 Gbps. They broadcast on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, with the Speedport 7 also supporting Wi-Fi 7, achieving wireless throughput up to 6.76 Gbps. These routers are ideal for streaming, gaming, and multiple devices simultaneously, and can serve as a mesh network base with compatible repeaters for larger homes. The Speedport 7 also includes LAN ports, a USB 3.0 port, and a DECT base for cordless phones, along with security features like Protect Home and parental controls (MyMagenta app) for managing devices and schedules .
  2. Separate Fiber Modem + WLAN Router In some setups, especially FTTB or FTTH connections, Telekom provides a fiber modem connected to the wall socket, with a separate WLAN router handling the home network. This allows flexibility in choosing routers, including models like the Speedport Smart 4 Plus, which supports dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz up to 1200 Mbit/s, 5 GHz up to 4800 Mbit/s), Wi-Fi 6, and four Gigabit Ethernet ports for wired devices. These routers are preconfigured for Telekom fiber, receive automatic software updates, and offer parental controls .
Key Features to Consider
  • Wi-Fi Standards: Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7 for faster speeds and better performance with multiple devices.
  • Speed: Up to 2 Gbps with integrated fiber routers; actual home Wi-Fi speeds may vary.
  • Ethernet Ports: For wired connections to PCs, Smart TVs, or gaming consoles.
  • Mesh Capability: Expandable coverage for larger homes using repeaters.
  • Security & Parental Controls: Protect Home, content filtering, and scheduling.
  • Service & Support: Preconfigured routers simplify setup and provide unified support from Telekom .
Summary

For Telekom fiber broadband, you can choose between a single integrated fiber router like the Speedport 7 for simplicity and maximum speed, or a fiber modem plus separate WLAN router for flexibility. Both options support high-speed internet, modern Wi-Fi standards, and advanced home networking features, ensuring stable connections for multiple devices in your household. Renting or purchasing options are available, with the Speedport 7 priced at €229.99 or available for monthly rental .
