DOM metrics include transmit power, receive power, temperature, laser bias current, and voltage. These readings are automatically collected and displayed in the switch management dashboard, with historical data available for trend analysis. DOM is particularly useful for detecting degradation or faults in SFP modules without physically disconnecting the fiber .

Direct Fiber Testing

For more precise measurements, a light source and power meter or an OTDR can be used. This method measures optical loss, reflections, and signal integrity across a fiber link. When using switches without DOM support, optical levels (TX/RX) can be compared on both ends to identify connection issues. A significant difference in received power between ends indicates potential faults or excessive loss .

  • Patch Panels and Adapters: Fibers are typically terminated on patch panels, allowing test equipment to connect via patch cords or jumpers without disrupting the network .
  • Parallel Monitoring: Multiple fibers can be monitored simultaneously using optical switches or WDM technology, which is especially useful in passive optical networks (PONs) with splitters .
  • Non-Intrusive Testing: Y-WDM couplers and DOM allow monitoring without disconnecting active traffic, ensuring continuous network operation .
