Input of relay protection

Protective relay inputs are primarily current and voltage signals from instrument transformers, which the relay uses to detect faults and abnormal conditions in power systems.Types of Inputs

Protective relays rely on instrument transformer signals to monitor electrical quantities:

  • Current Inputs (from Current Transformers, CTs): These provide scaled-down representations of line currents to the relay. CTs allow the relay to detect overcurrent, differential currents, or directional faults without exposing the relay to high currents directly .
  • Voltage Inputs (from Potential Transformers, PTs or Voltage Transformers, VTs): These supply the relay with line-to-line or line-to-neutral voltages, enabling it to monitor overvoltage, undervoltage, frequency deviations, or phase angle differences .
  • Auxiliary Inputs: Some relays also use signals from switches, alarms, or other relays to implement interlocking, permissive tripping, or logic functions .
Input Connection and Sensing
  • CT/PT Wiring: Proper connection of CTs and PTs to the relay terminals is critical. The relay senses the electrical quantities through these inputs, and any misconnection can compromise protection .
  • Polarization and Directionality: Certain relays, like directional overcurrent or distance relays, use a portion of the voltage input as a polarizing signal to determine the direction of fault current .
  • Trip and Close Circuits: Inputs are processed by the relay logic to decide whether to send a trip signal to the circuit breaker. The relay does not interrupt current directly but commands the breaker to isolate the faulted section .
Functional Role
  • Fault Detection: Inputs allow the relay to continuously monitor current, voltage, frequency, impedance, or differential quantities. When these exceed preset thresholds, the relay initiates a trip .
  • Selectivity and Coordination: Accurate input measurement ensures that only the faulted section is isolated, minimizing outages and maintaining system stability .
  • Reliability: The relay's performance depends on the quality of its inputs, including CT/PT accuracy, wiring integrity, and proper calibration .
Practical Considerations
  • Testing and Maintenance: Regular testing of CT/PT circuits and relay inputs is essential to ensure correct operation during faults .
  • Input Sensitivity: Relays must be sensitive enough to detect faults under actual operating conditions but avoid false trips from normal load variations .
  • Integration with Protection Schemes: Inputs are coordinated with upstream and downstream relays to achieve proper protection hierarchy and timing . In summary, relay protection inputs are the critical electrical signals from CTs, PTs, and auxiliary devices that enable protective relays to detect faults, make decisions, and command breakers to isolate faulted sections reliably and selectively. Proper connection, calibration, and maintenance of these inputs are essential for effective power system protection.

Electromechanical relays can be classified into several different types as follows: "Armature"-type relays have a pivoted lever supported on a hinge or knife-edge pivot, which carries a moving contact. These relays may work on either alternating or direct current, but for alternating current, a shading coil on the pole is used to maintain contact force throughout the alternating current cycle. Because the air gap between t
