Revit cable tray specifications settings

Revit cable tray settings allow you to customize size, type, routing, elevation, and fittings to ensure accurate MEP modeling and automated behavior.Setting Up Cable Tray Defaults

To configure cable tray sizes and defaults in Revit, navigate to Manage > MEP Settings > Electrical Settings > Cable Trays > Size. Here, you can add custom sizes, activate or deactivate default sizes, and adjust Height and Width parameters. These settings are remembered when using the "Create Similar" function for new cable trays in your project .

Editing Cable Tray Types

Revit provides two main type selectors: Cable Tray with Fittings and Cable Tray without Fittings. To edit a type:

  1. Select the cable tray and click Edit Type.
  2. Adjust parameters such as bend radius multiplier, vertical inside/outside bends, T-junctions, and channel reducers.
  3. Apply the changes to ensure proper routing and fitting behavior . Using Cable Tray with Fittings is recommended for automated generation of elbows, tees, and crosses when trays intersect or change direction .
Routing and Placement

Cable trays can be placed similarly to conduits:

  • Set the offset and elevation in the properties palette.
  • Draw straight runs or use the Draw Cable Tray tool to follow the desired path.
  • Revit will automatically generate fittings based on your type settings and loaded families .
Cable Tray Settings Pane

The Cable Tray Settings pane includes:

  • Use Annot. Scale for Single Line Fittings: Determines if fittings are drawn at the annotation size.
  • Cable Tray Fitting Annotation Size: Controls plotted size in single-line views.
  • Cable Tray Size Separator: Symbol used to display tray dimensions (e.g., 12" x 4").
  • Cable Tray Size Suffix and Connector Separator: Customize how sizes and connectors are displayed .
Best Practices
  • Start with the correct MEP template to ensure all cable tray families and fittings are available .
  • Load fitting families early to avoid missing components during routing.
  • Adjust project defaults for angle, elevation, and routing preferences before placing trays.
  • Use automated routing where possible to maintain clean, coordinated layouts.
  • Document trays with schedules, tags, and dimensions for accurate project deliverables . By properly configuring these settings, Revit will handle cable tray placement efficiently, maintain accurate dimensions, and generate fittings automatically, streamlining MEP design workflows.
