Buried Cable Tray Treatment

Cable trays or tray-rated cables can be buried underground if they are specifically designed for direct burial, with proper trenching, protection, and compliance with electrical standards.Cable Selection and Suitability

Not all tray cables are suitable for underground installation. Only direct burial-rated tray cables should be used, as they are constructed with specialized insulation and jacketing materials such as abrasion-resistant PVC, polyethylene, or cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) to withstand soil moisture, chemicals, abrasives, and mechanical stress from earth pressure or rocks . These cables are typically marked DIRECT BURIAL, DIR BUR, and comply with UL and NEC standards for underground installation . For long runs or areas with foot or vehicular traffic, steel wire armoured (SWA) cables are recommended for additional mechanical protection .

Trench Preparation and Burial

The trench should be free of sharp rocks and debris, and a bedding layer of sand or fine soil is recommended to cushion the cable . Protective measures may include concrete or stone slabs above the cable in high-traffic areas, and warning tapes to alert future excavators . Minimum burial depth depends on local codes and voltage, typically ranging from 24 to 42 inches, with deeper burial required in agricultural or high-load areas . If the required depth cannot be achieved, a protective layer of 100mm fine sand or soft soil above and below the cable, covered with cement slabs or bricks, is recommended .

Cable Tray Considerations

While cable trays are generally used above ground, burial is possible if the tray or cable is rated for direct burial. The tray should maintain proper spacing and support to prevent cable damage, and materials should be selected based on environmental conditions, such as corrosion resistance for wet or aggressive soils . Closed or solid-bottom trays can provide additional protection against mechanical damage and moisture ingress.

Maintenance and Compliance

Buried cable trays or direct burial cables are less accessible for maintenance, so careful planning is essential. Compliance with standards such as GB 50217-2018, GB 50168-2018, BS 7671, and local electrical codes ensures safety, reliability, and long-term performance . Proper segregation of power, control, and instrumentation cables is also recommended to minimize electromagnetic interference and facilitate future upgrades .

Summary

To safely bury cable trays or tray-rated cables:

  • Use direct burial-rated cables or SWA cables for mechanical protection.
  • Prepare a clean trench with sand bedding and optional protective slabs.
  • Ensure minimum burial depth according to local codes.
  • Select tray materials suitable for soil and environmental conditions.
  • Follow standards and regulations for installation, segregation, and maintenance. This approach ensures durable, safe, and code-compliant underground cable installations.
