Soft router with core switch

Specialty cable knowledge brief Published 24 Aug 2023

Prepared for preliminary research by the ZITHA SPECIALTY knowledge desk. Confirm fire performance, mechanical protection, loss budgets and installation requirements against current standards and product documentation.

A soft router can technically serve as a core switch in small to medium networks, but performance, reliability, and scalability limitations make it less suitable for high-demand enterprise or ISP core networks.Understanding Soft Routers

A soft router is a software-based routing system running on general-purpose hardware, such as a PC or server, using operating systems like Linux, FreeBSD, OpenWRT, pfSense, or OPNsense . It can handle routing, VLANs, VPNs, firewall rules, and advanced network policies, making it highly customizable and cost-effective . Open-source router OS like VyOS or RouterOS can turn commodity hardware into a feature-rich router capable of dynamic routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, RIP) and VPN connectivity .

Core Switch Requirements

A core switch or core router operates at the backbone of a network, handling high-speed traffic between distribution layers or subnets . Key requirements include:

  • High throughput: Ability to forward packets at line rate across multiple high-speed interfaces.
  • Low latency: Minimal delay for internal traffic.
  • Redundancy and reliability: Support for failover, VRRP, or distributed switching.
  • Scalability: Ability to handle hundreds or thousands of devices and VLANs. Traditional core switches are purpose-built with specialized ASICs and distributed switching fabrics to meet these demands .
Feasibility of Using a Soft Router as a Core Switch
  • Small to Medium Networks: For home labs, small offices, or test environments, a soft router can act as a core switch, providing routing, VLAN segmentation, and firewalling . It allows flexibility in experimenting with routing protocols and network policies.
  • Performance Limitations: Soft routers rely on CPU and memory of general-purpose hardware. High throughput or low-latency requirements may not be achievable, especially with multiple high-speed interfaces or heavy traffic loads .
  • Reliability Concerns: Unlike enterprise core switches, soft routers may lack redundant power supplies, hot-swappable interfaces, or hardware failover, making them less suitable for mission-critical networks .
  • Scalability: While software routing can scale by adding resources, it cannot match the line-rate performance of dedicated core switches in large networks .
Best Practices if Deploying a Soft Router as Core
  1. Use high-performance hardware with multiple NICs and sufficient CPU/memory.
  2. Choose a robust router OS like VyOS, pfSense, or Ubuntu Soft Router for advanced routing and VLAN support .
  3. Implement redundancy at the network level (dual soft routers, link aggregation) to mitigate hardware failure.
  4. Monitor CPU, memory, and network load to prevent bottlenecks.
  5. Limit deployment to environments where traffic volume is moderate and ultra-low latency is not critical.
Conclusion

While a soft router can function as a core switch in small-scale or experimental networks, it is generally not recommended for high-performance enterprise or ISP core networks due to hardware limitations, potential reliability issues, and scalability constraints. For production-grade core networks, dedicated core switches or routers remain the standard choice.
