Configuration of the Aggregation Switch in the Monitoring System

To configure an aggregation switch for monitoring, set up TAP or SPAN ports to collect traffic, map them to monitoring tool ports, and optionally use link aggregation for bandwidth and redundancy.

TAP Aggregation Setup
  1. Designate the Aggregation Switch: Choose a switch to act as the TAP aggregation point, connecting it to multiple monitoring tools such as packet sniffers, RMON probes, or IPS devices .
  2. Configure Tap Ports: Assign interfaces on the switch as tap ports to receive traffic from SPAN sessions or physical TAPs in the network .
  3. Configure Tool Ports: Assign interfaces as tool ports to transmit replicated traffic to monitoring devices .
  4. Map Tap Groups to Tool Groups: Group tap ports and tool ports, then map them so that traffic from tap ports is replicated to the corresponding tool ports .
  5. Apply Filtering (Optional): Use ACLs to filter specific traffic and redirect it to an internal multicast group, which then forwards the traffic to multiple monitoring tools .
Link Aggregation (LAG) for Monitoring
  1. Enable LACP: Configure Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP) in active or passive mode to combine multiple physical ports into a single logical link for higher bandwidth and redundancy .
  2. Select Ports for Aggregation: Choose the ports that will participate in the LAG and ensure both ends of the link support LACP .
  3. Configure Aggregator Mode: Decide whether to select the aggregator based on bandwidth (default) or port count .
  4. Fallback Mode (Optional): Enable LACP fallback to allow connectivity if the remote device does not support LACP, useful for PXE boot or legacy devices .
Monitoring and Management
  • Use Controller Software: For switches like Ubiquiti UniFi or Meraki, adopt the switch in the controller software, configure VLANs, port types (access/trunk), and monitor traffic performance .
  • Regular Updates: Keep firmware updated to ensure security and optimal performance .
  • Port Mapping Verification: Confirm that tap ports are correctly mapped to tool ports and that traffic is being replicated as expected .
Best Practices
  • Dedicate a switch or a set of interfaces solely for TAP aggregation to avoid conflicts with regular switching tasks .
  • Use multicast groups internally to efficiently redirect traffic to multiple monitoring tools .
  • Monitor switch performance to ensure that aggregation does not overload the switch CPU or bandwidth .
  • Document port assignments and LAG configurations for easier troubleshooting and maintenance.

By following these steps, you can configure an aggregation switch to collect, replicate, and forward network traffic to monitoring tools efficiently while maintaining network performance and reliability.
