Light circulates infinitely within the optical cable

Light does not circulate infinitely in an optical cable; it is guided through the fiber by total internal reflection but gradually loses intensity due to attenuation. How Light Travels in Optical Fibers

Optical fibers consist of a core surrounded by a cladding, each with distinct refractive indices. The core has a higher refractive index than the cladding, which allows light entering at a proper angle to undergo total internal reflection, bouncing repeatedly within the core without escaping into the cladding . This mechanism confines the light and enables it to travel long distances with minimal loss.

Total Internal Reflection

For total internal reflection to occur, the angle of incidence of the light at the core-cladding interface must exceed the critical angle, which is determined by Snell's law and the refractive indices of the core and cladding . When this condition is met, light reflects entirely back into the core, maintaining signal integrity over the fiber's length.

Factors Affecting Light Propagation

While light is effectively confined, it does not circulate infinitely. Over long distances, several factors cause attenuation:

  • Material absorption: Some light energy is absorbed by the glass or dopants in the core.
  • Scattering: Imperfections in the fiber cause light to scatter, reducing intensity.
  • Bending losses: Sharp bends or microbends in the fiber can allow light to escape the core .
  • Connector and splice losses: Misalignment or contamination at joints can reduce signal strength. Modern optical fibers are engineered to minimize these losses, achieving very low attenuation rates (as low as 0.17 dB/km), which allows light to travel long distances efficiently, but eventually, signal amplification or regeneration is required for extremely long transmissions .
Summary

In essence, light in an optical fiber is guided by total internal reflection and remains largely confined within the core, but it does not circulate infinitely. Signal attenuation, bending, and other practical factors mean that over long distances, the light gradually diminishes, necessitating amplification or repeaters to maintain communication quality .
