Fiber Bragg Grating 6

Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) strain sensors are highly sensitive optical devices that measure strain by detecting shifts in reflected light wavelength caused by deformation of the fiber.Working Principle

FBG strain sensors operate by embedding a periodic variation in the refractive index along a short segment of optical fiber, forming a Bragg grating. When the fiber is subjected to strain, the grating period and the effective refractive index change, causing a shift in the Bragg wavelength of reflected light. This wavelength shift is directly proportional to the applied strain, allowing precise measurement of structural deformation .

Sensor Design and Installation

FBG strain sensors can be attached directly to metal surfaces such as beams, pipes, or embedded into composite structures. They are often housed in stainless steel or silicone protective casings to enhance durability and allow for free movement at anchoring points. Some sensors, like the ST2 model, include multiple FBGs to measure strain and temperature simultaneously, while others, like the S9, are designed for spot welding onto surfaces .

Key Advantages
  • High sensitivity and resolution: Capable of detecting minor strain variations .
  • Long-distance data transmission: Optical signals can travel over extended distances without amplification .
  • Resistance to electromagnetic interference (EMI): Ideal for environments with electrical noise .
  • Durability in harsh conditions: Low thermal conductivity and corrosion resistance make them suitable for civil, aerospace, and industrial applications .
  • Compact and lightweight: Suitable for embedding in structures or aerospace applications .
Applications

FBG strain sensors are widely used in structural health monitoring (SHM) for bridges, buildings, dams, and pipelines. They provide real-time data to prevent structural failures and support maintenance planning. They are also applied in aerospace, energy, and maritime sectors, where precise strain monitoring is critical .

Summary

FBG strain sensors combine optical precision, durability, and immunity to interference, making them a preferred choice for monitoring strain in critical structures. Their ability to measure both strain and temperature, along with long-term stability, ensures reliable performance in demanding environments .
