Marking of Single-Mode Fiber Optic Cables

Single-mode fiber optic cables are marked using the ANSI/TIA-598-C color code for individual fibers, along with jacket markings indicating fiber type, fire rating, compliance, and other specifications.

Fiber Color Coding

Single-mode fibers follow the ANSI/TIA-598-C standard, which provides a systematic color sequence for identifying individual fibers within a cable. The standard uses the same 12-color sequence as multimode fibers: Blue, Orange, Green, Brown, Slate, White, Red, Black, Yellow, Violet, Rose, Aqua. For cables with more than 12 fibers, the sequence repeats, allowing technicians to identify fibers in high-count cables efficiently .

In high-fiber-count cables (e.g., 48, 96, or 144 fibers), a “Tube and Fiber” system is used: the 12-color sequence is applied to the outer buffer tube, and then repeated for individual fibers inside the tube. For example, Fiber #34 would be the 10th fiber (Violet) in the 3rd tube (Green), . This system ensures accurate identification during splicing and termination.

Cable Jacket Markings

Single-mode fiber cables also include jacket markings that provide essential information:

  • Fiber type and count: Indicates whether the cable is OS2, single-mode, or multimode, and the number of fibers.
  • Fire rating: Labels such as OFNR (Riser), OFNP (Plenum), OFNG (General Purpose), or LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) indicate compliance with NEC® fire safety standards .
  • Compliance and standards: ISO, IEC, and UL markings ensure the cable meets international safety and performance requirements.
  • Length and manufacturing date: Helps track cable usage, warranty, and lifecycle management.
  • Construction features: Information about armored, direct burial, or aerial-rated cables.
  • Directional arrows: Indicate proper pulling direction during installation to prevent damage .
Connectors and Patchcords

Single-mode patchcords are often yellow, with connector types indicated by color: blue for PC connectors and green for APC connectors. Proper color coding ensures correct fiber type selection and maintains system performance .

Benefits of Standardized Marking
  • Identification: Quickly locate and trace individual fibers during installation, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Maintenance: Simplifies fault isolation and reduces downtime.
  • Compliance: Ensures adherence to industry standards for safety, performance, and interoperability .

By following ANSI/TIA-598-C standards and proper jacket labeling, single-mode fiber optic cables can be installed, maintained, and managed efficiently, minimizing errors and ensuring reliable network performance.
