How about fiber optic sensors

Fiber optic sensors are devices that use light transmitted through optical fibers to detect physical, chemical, or electrical changes with high precision and immunity to electromagnetic interference.Overview

A fiber optic sensor measures a physical quantity by modulating light traveling through an optical fiber and converting it into an electronic signal for analysis . These sensors are widely used in industrial automation, structural health monitoring, electrical current measurement, and environments where traditional electronic sensors may fail due to space constraints, high voltage, or electromagnetic interference .

Working Principle

Fiber optic sensors operate by transmitting light from a source through an optical fiber to a sensing element or target. Changes in the environment—such as displacement, temperature, pressure, or magnetic fields—alter the light's intensity, phase, polarization, wavelength, or transit time, which is then detected and interpreted by an amplifier or detector . Specialized sensors, like fiber optic current sensors, use the Faraday Effect, where a magnetic field rotates the polarization of light, allowing precise measurement of current without direct electrical contact .

Types of Fiber Optic Sensors
  1. Intrinsic Sensors: The fiber itself acts as the sensing element, with environmental changes directly affecting the light traveling through it .
  2. Extrinsic Sensors: The fiber transmits light to and from a remote sensing element, which interacts with the target .
  3. Hybrid Sensors: Combine intrinsic and extrinsic principles for specialized applications .
  4. Structural Types:
    • Thru-beam: Separate transmitter and receiver fibers.
    • Reflective: Single fiber with light reflected back from the target. Variants include parallel, coaxial, and separate reflective types .
Advantages
  • Immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI), making them ideal for high-voltage or flammable environments .
  • Non-contact operation, reducing safety risks and wear .
  • High sensitivity and precision, capable of detecting small changes in strain, temperature, or current .
  • Flexibility and compactness, suitable for tight spaces or harsh conditions .
  • Distributed sensing capability, allowing monitoring over long distances .
Applications
  • Industrial Automation: Detecting object presence, position, or motion in factory environments .
  • Structural Health Monitoring: Measuring strain, stress, or deformation in bridges, buildings, and pipelines .
  • Electrical Systems: Measuring current and voltage in power grids using fiber optic current sensors .
  • Harsh Environments: Monitoring in high-temperature, high-voltage, or explosive areas where conventional sensors are unsafe .
  • Seismic and Sonar Applications: Using optical fibers as hydrophones for underwater or geophysical sensing . Fiber optic sensors are versatile, reliable, and increasingly essential in modern sensing applications where precision, safety, and environmental resilience are critical.
