How to use a dark fiber optic sensor

A dark fiber optic sensor detects low-reflectivity objects by using a fiber amplifier and properly aligned emitter and receiver fibers, with adjustments for light mode, threshold, and sensing distance.Understanding the Sensor

Dark fiber optic sensors are typically diffuse-type sensors, meaning the emitter and receiver are integrated in one unit, and detection relies on light reflected from the target back to the sensor. They are ideal for detecting dark or low-contrast objects, which absorb most light and are difficult for standard sensors to detect. Using blue light or sensors with high excess gain improves detection reliability for dark targets and against dark backgrounds .

Wiring and Power
  1. Connect the power supply: Most sensors operate on 10–24 V DC. The brown wire connects to +V, the blue wire to 0 V, and the black wire is the output signal .
  2. NPN or PNP output: Ensure your control system matches the sensor output type. NPN outputs typically switch the load to ground when activated.
Fiber Setup
  1. Install the fiber optic core: Choose a fiber suitable for your application (plastic or glass).
  2. Secure the fibers: Use a fiber clamp or adapter sleeve to hold the transmitter and receiver fibers in place. Ensure the fibers are aligned and locked to prevent movement .
  3. Positioning: Place the fiber close to the target object. The small sensing section allows detection in narrow or hard-to-reach locations .
Sensor Configuration
  1. Mode selection: Set the sensor to Light ON or Dark ON depending on whether the output should activate when light is detected or blocked.
  2. Adjust sensing range: Use the adjustment port or amplifier display to set the threshold for detection. The LED bar on the amplifier indicates signal strength and helps fine-tune the sensor .
  3. Delay settings: Some sensors allow you to adjust response delay to filter out transient signals.
Calibration and Testing
  1. Warm-up: Allow the sensor electronics to stabilize before calibration.
  2. Test with target objects: Place the dark object in the sensing range and observe the output relay or LED indicators. Adjust the threshold until the sensor reliably detects the object.
  3. Check background interference: Ensure the sensor can distinguish the dark object from the background, especially if the background is also dark .
Practical Tips
  • Use blue light sensors for better reflection from dark surfaces.
  • Ensure fibers are clean and free from scratches to maintain signal quality.
  • Mount the amplifier in a location that is accessible for adjustments but protected from environmental hazards.
  • For multiple sensors, consider using amplifiers with dual displays to monitor signal levels and thresholds simultaneously . By following these steps, a dark fiber optic sensor can reliably detect low-reflectivity objects in industrial or laboratory applications, even under challenging conditions.
