Unprotected fiber optic cable models

Unarmored fiber optic cables are lightweight, flexible cables without metallic armor, ideal for indoor or protected environments.Types of Unarmored Fiber Optic Cables
  1. Tight-Buffered Bare Fiber This model features a tight buffer coating directly applied to each optical fiber, enhancing durability and flexibility. It is suitable for indoor installations, laboratory use, and short-distance connections where bending and handling are frequent .
  2. Bare Ribbon Fiber Multiple fibers are arranged in parallel ribbons without individual protective coatings. This design allows efficient splicing and termination, making it ideal for high-density installations such as data centers .
  3. Bare Plastic Optical Fiber (POF) Made from transparent polymer materials instead of glass, bare POF is highly flexible and easy to terminate. It is commonly used for short-distance communication and experimental setups .
  4. Standard Unarmored Fiber Cable These cables include the core fibers, a protective buffer, strength members like aramid yarn, and an outer jacket (PVC or LSZH), but no metallic armor. They are lighter, more flexible, and easier to install than armored cables, making them suitable for indoor backbones, enterprise LANs, and FTTH drop cables .
Applications
  • Indoor Deployments: Ideal for building backbones, office networks, and data center interconnects where physical protection is provided by walls, ceilings, or conduits .
  • Research and Development: Used in laboratories for optical experiments due to their flexibility and ease of handling .
  • FTTH Installations: Drop cables for fiber-to-the-home deployments often use unarmored designs to reduce cost and simplify installation .
Advantages
  • Lower Cost: Absence of steel or corrugated armor reduces material and manufacturing expenses .
  • Ease of Installation: Lightweight and flexible, they navigate tight bends and congested cable trays more easily .
  • Compact Footprint: Smaller diameter allows denser packing in ducts and cable management systems, which is valuable in space-constrained environments . Unarmored fiber optic cables are best suited for environments where physical abuse is minimal and cost, flexibility, and ease of installation are priorities. For outdoor or high-risk areas, armored alternatives are recommended to prevent damage from rodents, construction, or harsh weather.
