Testing fiber optic breakpoints with an optical power meter

You can locate fiber optic breakpoints by measuring optical power loss along the fiber with a calibrated optical power meter and light source, identifying points where signal drops significantly.Equipment Needed
  • Optical Power Meter (OPM) calibrated for the fiber wavelength (e.g., 850 nm, 1300 nm for multimode; 1310 nm, 1550 nm for single-mode) .
  • Stable Light Source to inject a known optical signal into the fiber .
  • Reference Cable or Patchcord of the same fiber type to establish baseline power .
  • Connector Adapters and Cleaning Supplies to ensure accurate readings .
Step-by-Step Procedure
  1. Prepare and Clean Equipment Clean all fiber connectors and adapters using lint-free wipes and fiber cleaning solution to prevent false readings caused by dust or dirt .
  2. Calibrate the Optical Power Meter Set the OPM to the wavelength of the light source and zero the meter if required. This ensures accurate measurement of optical power in dBm or mW .
  3. Measure Reference Power Connect the light source to a known good reference cable and measure the output power at the other end. Record this as the baseline power for comparison .
  4. Connect Fiber Under Test Attach the fiber optic cable to the light source and connect the far end to the optical power meter. Ensure connections are secure but avoid bending the fiber excessively .
  5. Measure Received Power Read the optical power at the meter. Compare it to the reference power to calculate insertion loss: Loss (dB) = Reference Power (dBm) – Measured Power (dBm) .
  6. Identify Breakpoints
    • A sudden drop in power indicates a potential break or severe bend.
    • Gradual loss may indicate splices, connectors, or microbends.
    • For long fibers, segment testing with patchcords or intermediate access points can help narrow down the location of the fault .
  7. Document and Analyze Record the measured power, wavelength, and calculated loss for each fiber segment. This helps track trends and locate recurring issues .
Tips for Accuracy
  • Always match the OPM wavelength to the light source.
  • Avoid testing near bright lights or dusty environments.
  • Regularly calibrate the OPM to maintain precision.
  • Use multiple measurements along the fiber to pinpoint the exact location of breaks or high-loss points . By following this method, technicians can effectively locate fiber optic breakpoints, assess network health, and plan repairs or maintenance efficiently.
