Standards for Galvanized Coating of Fireproof Cable Trays

Fireproof cable trays require a continuous, uniform galvanized coating with sufficient thickness and adhesion to ensure corrosion resistance and compatibility with fireproofing measures.Coating Quality and Appearance

The galvanized coating on fireproof cable trays must be continuous, uniform, complete, and practically smooth. Minor dull or light grey areas, repair marks, passivation films, and water marks are permissible, but defects such as bare spots, blisters, rough nodules, or excessive zinc dross are not allowed, as they can compromise corrosion protection and mechanical integrity .

Zinc Coating Thickness
  • Electro-galvanized trays: Minimum zinc thickness of 12 µm, suitable primarily for dry indoor environments due to limited corrosion resistance .
  • Hot-dip galvanized trays: Typically thicker coatings, providing superior corrosion resistance, suitable for outdoor, humid, or industrial environments . The corrosion resistance of galvanized trays is directly proportional to the zinc coating thickness, and thicker coatings are recommended for fireproof cable trays exposed to harsh conditions.
Adhesion and Density Tests
  • Copper Sulfate Test: Ensures coating density; no copper-red deposits should appear after immersion cycles .
  • Mandrel Wrap Test: Confirms coating adhesion; the zinc layer must not peel or flake when bent .
Environmental Considerations

Electro-galvanized trays with thin coatings are not suitable for marine or high-humidity environments, as chloride ions can penetrate the zinc layer, causing white rust (zinc corrosion) and red rust (steel corrosion) within weeks . Hot-dip galvanized trays are preferred for outdoor or corrosive environments.

Fireproofing Compatibility

Fireproof cable trays often use galvanized steel, stainless steel, or fire-resistant coated trays. The galvanized coating must maintain its integrity under high temperatures and in combination with fireproof coatings or flame-retardant materials . Proper selection ensures both mechanical support and fire safety for electrical cables.

Installation and Maintenance
  • Ensure mechanical strength and proper tray thickness to support cable loads without deformation .
  • Maintain electrical continuity through grounding jumpers at each connection point.
  • Remove sharp edges or debris to prevent damage to cables and coatings .
  • Protect trays during transport and storage, especially in humid or marine conditions, to prevent premature corrosion . By adhering to these requirements, galvanized fireproof cable trays can provide long-term corrosion protection, mechanical stability, and fire safety in industrial and commercial installations.
