How to connect a single-mode armored dual-core fiber optic cable

Connecting a single-mode armored dual-core fiber optic cable involves careful preparation, proper stripping, cleaving, and either mechanical or fusion splicing to ensure minimal signal loss and safe handling.Step 1: Plan and Prepare

Before handling the cable, plan the installation route and measure the required length, leaving extra slack for coiling or future maintenance. Check the cable's tensile load and bend radius—single-mode armored cables typically require a bend radius of 10D (dynamic) and 5D (static) to prevent fiber damage . Gather necessary tools: fiber strippers, cleavers, fusion splicer or mechanical splice kit, cleaning kits, and inspection microscope .

Step 2: Strip the Armored Cable
  1. Use a fiber cable cutter to cut the cable to the desired length.
  2. Carefully remove the outer armored jacket without nicking the inner fibers. For dual-core cables, separate the two fibers gently.
  3. Strip the buffer coating to expose 40–50 mm of bare fiber for termination or splicing .
  4. Handle Kevlar strands carefully; they can be sharp and hazardous.
Step 3: Cleave the Fiber

Use a precision fiber cleaver to create a clean, perpendicular end face. A proper cleave ensures minimal light loss and avoids “lips” or uneven surfaces that can degrade signal quality .

Step 4: Choose Termination Method
  • Mechanical Splicing: Align the two fiber ends in a mechanical splice connector. This method is faster and suitable for temporary or field connections. Typical insertion loss is around 0.3 dB .
  • Fusion Splicing: Use a fusion splicer to weld the fiber ends together. This produces a permanent, low-loss connection ideal for long-distance single-mode applications. After splicing, protect the joint with a fusion splice protector .
Step 5: Connector Termination (Optional)

If connecting to network equipment:

  1. Insert the cleaved fiber into the appropriate single-mode connector (LC, SC, or FC).
  2. Polish the end face using a polishing puck from coarse to fine grit to achieve a mirrored surface.
  3. Inspect under a microscope at 200–400x magnification to ensure no scratches or dirt are present .
Step 6: Test the Connection

After splicing or terminating, use an Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) or Optical Loss Test Set (OLTS) to verify signal integrity, check for excessive loss, and confirm proper alignment .

Step 7: Secure and Protect
  • Coil any excess cable neatly, avoiding sharp bends.
  • Ensure armored cables are supported and protected from environmental hazards, especially if installed outdoors or in industrial settings .
  • Label the fibers for easy identification and future maintenance. By following these steps, a single-mode armored dual-core fiber optic cable can be safely connected with minimal signal loss, ensuring reliable long-term network performance.
