How to use a concealed fiber optic splice box

A concealed fiber optic splice box protects and organizes fiber splices while maintaining signal integrity through proper cable preparation, splicing, and sealing.Preparing the Fiber Cable

Begin by removing the outer jacket of the fiber optic cable, along with any shielding or armor, to expose the loose tubes. Leave a sufficient length (typically around 3 meters) for splicing and handling. Clean the exposed fibers and strength members using a suitable cleaning solution, and abrade the outer jacket for about 150mm to ensure a secure seal with the closure's sealing rings .

Installing the Cable in the Splice Box

Select sealing rings that match the cable diameter and place them on the cable. Insert the cable into the designated entry port of the splice box, ensuring the shield layer is properly grounded. Wrap self-adhesive sealing tape between the rings to create a tight seal, then secure the cable to the closure base using a hose clamp or other manufacturer-recommended fasteners .

Splicing the Fibers

Inside the splice box, fibers are typically organized in splice trays. You can use fusion splicing for a permanent, low-loss connection or mechanical splicing for quicker, temporary connections. Carefully arrange the fibers in the trays to avoid stress, bending, or pinching, and ensure that each splice is neatly stored to prevent damage .

Sealing and Protection

Once all fibers are spliced and organized, close the splice box securely. Many boxes feature O-ring seals and robust covers to protect against water, dust, and environmental hazards. For outdoor or harsh environments, armored closures or additional protective layers may be used .

Maintenance and Checks

Regularly inspect the splice box for signs of moisture, dirt, or mechanical stress. Keep a log of inspections and any maintenance performed. Proper organization and periodic checks help maintain signal quality and extend the life of the fiber network . By following these steps—preparing the cable, splicing fibers carefully, sealing the closure, and performing routine maintenance—you ensure that your concealed fiber optic splice box provides reliable, long-lasting protection for your fiber network.
